Free WiFi at Starbucks

Friday, June 6th, 2008

I was anxious to try out the free WiFi service at my local Starbucks. To use the free service, you need a Starbucks gift card that’s been used within the last 30 days. Unfortunately, the balance on my previous card had run out and I needed to get a new one.

So, I grabbed my 2 liter jar of loose change and went to the local supermarket to use the Coin*Star machine. If you are not familiar, these machines will count your change for you and give you back cash (after a 9% service fee) or a gift card (free). You can select from a variety of partners for the gift cards, including Amazon.com and Starbucks.

Next, you need to register the gift card at Starbucks.com to create a Starbucks and AT&T WiFi user accounts. There is an account number on the gift card and you must also physically scratch and reveal a code that is printed on the card. Both of these numbers, along with your name, email address, and mailing address are required during the registration process. An email will then be sent to you and you must click on the activation link contained in that email message to complete the activation process.

That’s it. Once your account is activated, you can then log in to the AT&T WiFi greeting page at any Starbucks. You are allowed up to 2 hours per day of free surfing, email, etc. Bandwidth hogging applications like bit-torrent are not allowed.
