Speaking Engagement…

A friend of mine is teaching a class at the UCSC Extension in Silicon Valley and has invited me to give an overview of .NET and some of the cool things it can do.  I think I’ll demonstrate web services by writing a small WinForms client that displays DVD movie covers using Amazon’s web services.  Should be a hoot!

Quake II running in .NET CLR using Managed C++?

Well, it was only a matter of time… I’ve yet to download and run this, but I can’t wait. They even extended it and added a heads-up radar (similar to Halo). Vertigo Software has released an open source port of id Software’s popular Quake II game using Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 2003.  Download here, read the whitepaper here.  Things will be really cool when the same managed executable can run unmodified using Mono on Linux.

.NET gaining on Java…

According to this article, .NET is gaining ground. Growing to 37%, up from 25% a year ago, while Java only grew 3% to 33%. Windows 2003 Server is also selling at a triple run rate of what Windows 2000 did during their first 90 days on the market.
